Indoor Beach School Session

This week for their beach school session, the weather was a little unkind for year 2 to make the trip out, instead Mrs Gardener brought a beach experience to their classroom! Continuing with knot tying, the children recapped the clove hitch (fish on a dish) they then had a go at making a lashing and reef knot, using these knots, the children practiced making a small tripod of their own in preparation for making a larger one with canes and rope to create a shelter. The children then split into two teams to create two different types of shelter, one team using the tripod, the other team using equipment found around the room: Great teamwork! Once the shelters were made the children went cloud-gazing and used their cloud spotter to work out which cloud they could see. Mrs Gardener also taught the children about keeping safe on wet sand, they discovered that keeping still and using the 'starfish' pose was the safest way. Finally, to end their session, year 2 enjoyed quietly listening to the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore on the interactive board, another fantastic beach school session.

Beach School Session

What a glorious morning for a trip to the beach for Year 2! When the children arrived the tide was in and Mrs Gardener explained all about low and hide tides and why the sea level rises. The children then had a fun journey wading through the wet sand and over some rocks until they reached a dry spot, here, Mrs Gardener demonstrated a ‘fish on a dish’ type of knot, which the children all enthusiastically then had a go at making themselves. As part of their topic work, Year 2 have been studying John Loudon McAdam, a civil engineer and road builder. The children were set a task for their next activity, they all collected large stones, flat stones and small stones to construct a sturdy road of their own. The children enjoyed testing out their construction. What a fabulous beach session, Even a wild rabbit making an appearance! The children were really enthralled from start to finish, with exceptional behaviour as always. They are already looking forward to their next visit.
