Science - Thermal Insulation!

During Science this week, Year 5 have been conducting experiments to test the thermal insulation of various materials.

To ensure that the test was controlled, the children covered paper cups with cotton wool, felt or paper, leaving one paper cup without a cover. All were filled with the same volume of water at the same temperature.

At five minute intervals, the temperature was measured to ascertain which material was the best insulator.

At the end of the experiment, the children wrote their findings concluding that the best insulators were felt and paper, the worst being cotton wool.

Excellent work year 5.

During Art lessons this week, Year 5 have been tasked with creating an array of origami in preparation for the whole school Christmas decorations.

After learning about the origins of origami, the class were eager to understand how in Japanese culture, origami is often modelled on figures from the natural world such as animals and plants, and how the origami Crane is one of the most recognised, symbolising hope, healing and good fortune.

The children fully immersed themselves into the activity which as well as being fun, helps to develop their motor skills, patience, hand to eye coordination and boost creativity.

Anti - Bullying Week

This week is 'Anti -Bullying Week' and  Year 5 have engaged in various activities to develop a greater understanding of what bullying is and the impact it can have on those that have been bullied.

The whole school  took part in 'Odd Socks Day' giving each child the opportunity to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and uniqueness.

In PSCHEE, the children discussed what the various types of bullying are, and importantly, how to effectively respond should they ever find themselves in a bullying situation. The children also learnt about the importance of celebrating friendships, and how to promote positive relationships between their friends and peers.

As part of the BBC initiative to support Anti Bullying, the class watched the 'live lesson' and created their own motto in the form of an acrostic poem using the word RESPECT- this years theme for the campaign.

The RE lesson fell on World Kindness Day and the children learnt the difference a random act of kindness can make and the long lasting effect it can have and the significance of being empathetic towards each other.

Whilst immersing themselves fully into the topic, Year 5 have shown great maturity.

Craft Time

Year 5 are developing a variety of skills during their arts and crafts lessons.

This week, after drawing a design, the children were able to create their own tapestry. The benefits of the activity were immense as they developed their resilience through a task that most were trying for the first time.

Hand-eye coordination as well as fine motor skills were developed as each child intricately stitched their pattern. The silence in the room was a testament to how much each child was concentrating in order to complete their design.

Well done to all of year 5 for their perseverance to complete their task - each child was delighted to have become proficient in a new skill by the end of the lesson.

Year 5 have been able to make the most of the sunshine as their learning was taken outside for their Spanish lesson.

To reinforce what they had learnt in the classroom, a fun game took place outside between two groups where someone from the team had to be the first to reach Senora Dixon with the Spanish word of a body part name that she had given  in English. The first person to her with the correct Spanish word and pronunciation won a point for their team.
