Curriculum…
Avalon offers all children a broad and balanced curriculum that is based upon the national curriculum with some additional subjects being taught as appropriate. Pupils learn and make progress in the following areas: linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological, human and social, physical and aesthetic and creative education. Key skills – communication, application of number, information technology, working with others, improving own learning and performance and problem solving – are embedded in the programme of study at all ages, as are thinking and reasoning skills. At all ages, due regard is paid to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of education.
Nursery children follow the early years programme of study and the early emphasis on learning through play gradually incorporates more structured activities. The programme of study is enhanced by a range of activities including music and movement, art and craft, cookery, Spanish, dance and drama.
The curriculum for the infant and junior classes is centred on a thorough grounding in English and mathematics with due emphasis on science, technology, art, music, history, geography, ICT, PE and Spanish. The infant children are taught mainly by their form tutors with some specialist teaching in ICT, Spanish, music and PE. Junior children increasingly meet a wider range of specialist teachers.
Avalon has an impressive pass rate in 11+ examinations for entry to grammar schools and in
entrance examinations to local independent schools but we remain committed to a balanced programme for all pupils. At Avalon, the pupil is at the centre of all learning. Classes are small and all pupils are actively involved in each lesson as we believe that children learn best when they are confident and engaged.
